I got married to my husband in June of 2008 and moved into our house together. A few months later, he told me that he wanted to adopt a dog and at first I was a bit hesitant. I am more of a cat person and my husband isn’t a cat person. So at the spur of the moment one Saturday morning, we decided to head over to the local animal shelter to look for a puppy or young dog.
We walked up and down the aisles at the animal shelter looking for the perfect dog. If you have ever been to an animal shelter, you know that all of the dogs will bark at you to get your attention. The shelter had plenty of large breed dogs and only a handful of smaller dogs. They even had a few puppies but they were going to grow up to be big dogs too.
We were about ready to give up on finding a dog that morning, when my husband disappeared into a room at the shelter where they kept the cats. I thought my husband was in there looking at cats so I went into the room to check it out what he was looking at. I see that he found this ugly black/brown puppy in a cat cage and she was the perfect size.
My husband felt that this was the dog that he wanted to adopt. So we went into the adoption office and inquired about her. After filling out the adoption paperwork, we were able to take her home that day. We took her to get a bath because she was covered in fleas and was filthy dirty.
We came up with a name for her. She immediately responded to the name “Katie”. At first she was a quiet and shy puppy.
I took her to the groomer and got her cleaned up. It is amazing the difference that a haircut will make, the groomer transformed her into a cute puppy.
Katie was a well-behaved puppy and she was easy to house train. I couldn’t figure out how someone could toss a puppy like her out onto the side of a road in a box. However, I am grateful that we found her because she fit right into our family perfectly.
A dog loves the simple things and it doesn’t take much to make a dog happy.
Katie loves going for car rides and will follow you around the house begging to go with you the moment that you put your shoes on. She will run ahead of you and then will turn around, giving you that look, “Are you coming, Hurry up, What are you waiting on, or Let’s go?”
As individuals we are often consumed with business and forget to enjoy the simple things that life has to offer. We need to spend more time laughing and enjoying life instead of worrying about things that we can not control.
