My dear friend Tommy Dunbar and I collaborated on this theme song for Spontaneous Smiley. We have been friends since growing up together in Berkeley. Tommy was (and still is) in a band called the Rubinoos.
The Rubinoos were a big part of my life as a young adult–I even got to join them for a week when they were on tour opening for Elvis Costello’s Armed Forces Tour in 1979.
So when it came time to think about a song for Spontaneous Smiley, Tommy was my first call. I was so thrilled when he said, “Yes.” Big thanks to the whole band. You guys are all good friends. AND good sports! My goofy little kids’ song is hardly rock and roll, so thanks for indulging an old friend! I can’t express how happy it makes me to hear Jon and Susies’ voices singing the Spontaneous Smiley song.

Dear maker of my favorite bowl,
Could you please lower your price? I want a full set to serve 8, or even 4–dinner plates, salad plates, bowls. At $15 a piece, serving 4 would be $180 and 8 an astronomical $360. Hello, that’s not making me smile!
Just saying’ . . .
Smile. Be happy! (Make Smiley fans happy.)
The Smiley Lady

I was so thrilled to have Spontaneous Smiley featured in Ricki Lake’s new online magazine. You can read the July issue and
see the Smiley slideshow by downloading the pdf or getting the app for your mobile device.
I have also had the honor of writing a few articles for the
Ricki Lake Show website for their Parenting Column. In case you don’t know it, there are thousands of people out there who know me as Teacher Ruth, not as The Smiley Lady. I’ve been having a blast writing articles about my favorite subject, kids! Read the most recent article and get acquainted with Ricki’s new website and talk show.
