August 19
Air Travel Day
The airplane stays up
because it doesn’t have
the time to fall.
~ Orville Wright,
born this day 1871
Nice metaphor, Orville!
Today’s Smiley was found in Brazil looking out the plane’s window in 2013 as I traveled home from Paraguay where I’d been working on a medical mission with Operation Smile. In 2014 I went to the Philippines, earlier this year to Mexico, and coming up in October in Bolivia.
BTW, in addition to Orville Wright, blowing out the candles, Bill Clinton (1946) and Ogden Nash (1902) celebrate their birthdays on this day, too. Wouldn’t that be a fun group with whom to share birthday cake!
It’s also Potato Day over on our AUGUST calendar of a month full of Smiley Silliness. If you ever struggle to find Spontaneous Smiley Faces, I suggest having a sit down with some potatoes. Eye, yi, eye, have they got Smileys!
Additionally, it is Back to School Day. That is just wrong! Clearly this holiday has been pushed into August. No way would we have celebrated this day in August, back in the old days when I was a kid! August should still be summer vacation. Period! August 19th could be a day to celebrate beaches, sunscreen, sailboats, lemonade, ice cream, tents, campfires, even mosquitos. But back to School? NO way!
BTW, the Smileys and holidays on a month full of Smiley Silliness are all different than the ones you see here on the website’s Daily Smiley.
Plus as is often the case, just for grins, you get a different Air Travel Smiley in the Smiley-a-Day emailer.
