Name Your
Computer Day
Computers are magnificent tools
for the realization of dreams,
but no machine can replace
the human spark of spirit,
compassion, love,
and understanding.
~ Louis Gerstner
The origin of today’s Smiley photo might be hard to get. It’s a computer tower that used to sit under the desk of my friend Jennifer.
Over on a month full of Smiley Silliness it’s the beginning of Family Board Game Week. When my kids were little, we played board games all the time. Every year we got a new game on Christmas Eve to play before heading to bed to wait for Santa. I miss those days! It’s worth noting, you will often make memories around Board Game nights, but rarely after a night in front of the TV. My favorite wedding gift to give the happy couple is a whole mess of Board Games. I enjoyed thinking about all of this just now.
Hug a Runner Day. They do get awfully sweaty, so maybe today should also be Share a Towel Day. And speaking of towels, I have a friend with the coolest invention. It’s called the Show No Towel. It’s a towel but also a poncho so that changing in and out of your bathing suit at the beach is totally private.
Today is also the birthday of Dick Smothers. I sure loved the Smothers Brothers Show, way back when. Seems appropriate for Dick and Tommy’s sensibilities that it is also Absurdity Day.
Today we also say happy birthday to Joe Biden our hard working VP (1942)–he’s a big mouth with a big heart! Joining Joe are Robert Kennedy (1925) and Alistair Cooke (1908). And just typing Alistair’s name reminds me we are getting close to the next season of Dowton Abbey! YAY! I love Masterpiece Theatre! Now a dinner party with those 3 would be so fun!
On this Adoption Day, I send love and good wishes to all my friends who formed their family via adoption. Adoption makes being a parent possible for those who truly want to but cannot. How cool is that?!
Feel like reaching out? It is Volunteer Day. You’ll be amazed at how enthusiastically you’ll be welcomed. Take the first step to connect with a charity; there are so many that need the help of enthusiastic people. Feel like making a donation? Here’s the link to Spontaneous Smiley’s donation page with Operation Smile. So far we’ve paid for 43 kids to get reconstructive surgery. Could you pop for a child? That’s $240. But, any amount helps. The surgeries are funded a dollar, a fiver, a ten spot at a time! Or sign up for a monthly donation. Will you step up and part with a few bucks?
BTW, the Smileys and holidays on a month full of Smiley Silliness are all different than the ones you see here on the website’s Daily Smiley.
Plus, as is often the case, the Computer Smiley you get in the Smiley-a-Day emailer is different from what you see here.
