1st Telephone in the White House
A man, as a general rule,
owes very little to what
he is born with –
a man is what he makes of himself.
~ Alexander Graham Bell
Inventor of the telephone
And speaking of all things Presidential, on this day in 1994 Nelson Mandella became President of South Africa. Surely an accomplishment worthy of our taking pause to remember a great leader and a gentle man.
Today is also Fred Astair’s Birthday. Too bad his mom couldn’t have held off for a couple of weeks and given him the birthday of May 25, Tap Dance Day. He is one of my favorite song and dance men. You can see him hoofing it on one of the songs from my Smiley Playlists.
Today we say happy birthday to Bono (1960) and Kenen Thompson (1978). Does the fact that Kenan could be 36 freak you out? It does me!! As I type the birthdays, I always pick one (or more) celebrant for an imaginary dinner. I would very much love to meet Bono. I’d hit him up to help Operation Smile.
BTW, it’s also Clean Your Room Day, but I hardly think that qualifies as a holiday so I’m skipping it! You can’t celebrate them all, so I prioritize!! After all it’s also Ocean Day!! A frolic on the beach wins over a day tidying up.
BTW, the Smileys and holidays on a month full of Smiley Silliness are all different than the ones you see in the Daily Smiley.
Plus, as is often the case, the Phone Smiley you get in the Smiley-a-Day emailer is different from what you see here.
